365:2 How Words Do Damage

Once you say something, you really can’t take it back. It’s out there in the universe. It can’t be unheard or, even sometimes, completely forgotten. The words we use can uplift and inspire a person. They can make someone feel loved and/or give strength. However, on the flip side, they can tear a person down, crush them, make them question their worth, draw out insecurities… the possibilities, good or bad, are endless.

I’ve found myself in a situation where someone I love says things that actually damage our relationship. I don’t trust it as much as I once did. A relationship is a close connection between two people, especially one involving romantic or sexual feelings. The person I’ve been with for 2 1/2 years now continuously tells me we aren’t in a “relationship.” He says we’re dating. I see dating as something casual, something where there is no commitment, no monogamy. A couple does not have to live together to be in a relationship.

Sometimes I wish I knew what he was thinking. I know he wouldn’t want me seeing anyone else. He would think I was cheating on him. I consider us in a committed relationship with one another. But, the things he says make me question if he does.

It sucks to feel this way. It makes me question when he tells me he loves me. It makes me wonder if I’m just a body to keep him warm at night. I don’t think he realizes the damage he’s done or is doing to us by saying these things; and, honestly, I don’t know what to do.

365: 1 Every Story Has A Beginning

Over the years I’ve lost touch with a few things I once loved to do: reading and writing. I used to write and read every day. But, the writing became increasingly difficult as I was trying to navigate being newly separated and reading became a chore.

Waking up the other morning and realizing it was actually September hit me like a truck. I can’t believe we’re heading into the final stretch of 2020. There is a part of me that can’t welcome 2021 fast enough; however, I feel like there’s this unspoken need to approach 2021 cautiously and with apprehension because, I swear, I didn’t think 2020 could be worse than 2019 but here we are in this shitstorm that no one saw coming.

I can’t have the last four months pass by and feel like I have nothing to show for them. I’ve spent the last few months cooped up in my house, getting more depressed about the state of the country I live in, and feeling like I’m stuck in cement. Renewing this blog is the first step towards something more meaningful than what I’m doing now. The 365 Journal is to keep me at the minimal amount possible accountable to write daily.

Starting Over…

I began this blog talking about books and all the things I love/hate about them. But, years ago, I found my life changing in ways I never thought I would experience. I set the blog on a shelf and (literally) forgot about it.

Life hasn’t been easy these last 5 years. I’ve found myself trying to navigate a world that keeps throwing obstacles at me. This isn’t a post about how horrible my life is now. There is a lot of good in it despite the hardships.

I’ve quietly struggled with depression. Keeping my head up and trying to keep a smile on my face. I found myself slipping further into that abyss and knew I needed to begin to pull myself out. The only way I knew how to do that was to begin involving myself in “projects”. The first idea that came to mind was breathing life into my blog again. However, this time I wanted to do the blog different. I didn’t want to focus just on books. I wanted to discuss the things going on in my life like keeping my bullet journal, movie reviews, crafting, music, navigating the world after divorce… kind of a melting pot of the things that make up my life.

Pressing “Publish” hoping I won’t be out here talking to myself the whole time.

The Mathematics Book Tag

$_86

I was recently tagged by Nora at Reading Experiences With Nora to complete her original booktag. She assumed correctly in my case, I’ve always hated math. I was horrible at it.

a9254fb1f45afd236ccd2af47164766d1. Square root of x: A book or series that should have been much shorter: I’m horrible with series. I have rarely finished a series but I have a lot of them sitting on my shelves. I’m going to go with a series I haven’t finished yet because the fact that there are six books, all of which are anything but short reads, can be daunting and intimidating. I’m going with The Mortal Instruments series.

2. a*x: Name an author that you wish had written more books so that you could read them: Suzanne Collins. I just wonder what else she could write if she were to write something YA again. She hasn’t done anything other than children’s and middle grade I believe. I love HG. It’s one of the few series I’ve read more than once.

3. x/y: An over-hyped book or series: I went back and forth on this one. But, one stood out in my mind: 50 Shades of Grey. I read them. They were horrible. I could barely finish the final one. For me, my issue with them was that I knew they were originally Twilight fanfiction. I knew who each character was in relation to Twilight because they were basically lifted from Twilight. They weren’t here characters but someone else’s. And, the writing is just atrocious, not that Twilight is any better. Says the girl whose guilty pleasure is Twilight.

459583018_o-1024x7284. x + y: Name a fictional world you would love to live in: OMG! Is there any other fictional
world anyone who love to live in other that Harry Potter’s wizarding world!?! HELLO!!!! One word… HOGWARTS!

5. ( ): A book that someone should have explained better: I’m going to go with one that I think suffered because it was translated into English. I loved The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I also think the book suffered because it was so detailed. It’s definitely a book where I was rereading pages and asking what just happened.

tumblr_lfsqtfbYj61qenz53o1_5006 – xᵃ – A Villain Who You Loved Instead Of Hating: It may be an obvious or common choice but Severus Snape. I loved him from the start. He always made me laugh how he tormented Harry because most of the time Harry deserved to be tormented! And, then, in the end, he turned out to be one of the good guys.

7. -x: A book that shouldn’t have been published. Ever.: So, I am going to choose a book for the sake of choosing one. And, in avoiding using 50 Shades again, the book I choose that shouldn’t have been published is The Time Traveler’s Wife. UGH…. I hated that book. I read it years ago in a book club. I think everyone in the book club loved it but me. I couldn’t stand it and didn’t understand why so many of them thought it was great. I can say it was a book I actually hated.

Thank you Nora for tagging me. If anyone wants to participate in this tag, go for it! But, please remember to tag Nora at Reading Experiences With Nora.

Happy Reading!

A Reader’s Ramblings: Spoilers

tumblr_lfsqtfbYj61qenz53o1_500

When I am reading a book or even if it’s a book I want to read, I try and stay away from reviews and message boards. Because there is always someone who will place a spoiler in the review or thread without giving any sort of warning. There’s always someone who doesn’t use their brain and think that there are other people who haven’t read the book yet.

Today, this happened to me on Goodreads. I wasn’t even looking at reviews of a book. As I had mentioned earlier today, I am in the middle of reading The Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz. I was looking to see which book was next in the series AND to see where these other novellas fell in the series. I noticed that there was another series that was a continuation of the series. You how you can ask a question about a book. Someone asked a simple question about what books to read in order and if it mattered if she read the second series first. I guess you could compare it to someone asking if they needed to read The Mortal Instruments before The Infernal Devices.

Someone answered her and answered her with an effing spoiler!!!! A major spoiler!

GIF-jaw-drop-OMG-scared-shocked-GIF

I was about to say something to the poster but someone else had beat me to the punch. But, now I’m holding onto this piece of the plot that most likely should come as a surprise. I don’t know but it’s almost like “why bother now” right?

It’s irritating as hell that someone doesn’t think before they discuss a book or at the very least put that there is a spoiler ahead. For goodness sake, Goodreads gives you the option to hide a spoiler! Use it!!!!

The Angel by Tiffany Reisz

No safe word can protect the heart
Infamous erotica author and accomplished dominatrix Nora Sutherlin is doing something utterly out of character: hiding. While her longtime lover, Søren—whose fetishes, if exposed, would be his ruin—is under scrutiny pending a major promotion, Nora’s lying low and away from temptation in the lap of luxury.

Her host, the wealthy and uninhibited Griffin Fiske, is thrilled to have Nora stay at his country estate, especially once he meets her traveling companion. Young, inexperienced and angelically beautiful, Michael has become Nora’s protégé, and this summer with Griffin is going to be his training, where the hazing never ends.

But while her flesh is willing, Nora’s mind is wandering. To thoughts of Søren, her master, under investigation by a journalist with an ax to grind. And to another man from Nora’s past, whose hold on her is less bruising, but whose secrets are no less painful. It’s a summer that will prove the old adage: love hurts. (Synopsis via Goodreads & photo via Google search)

I no longer use my Nook because apparently it’s been rendered useless. Long story but I am no longer able to download any new ebooks to it. Barnes and Noble has been useless in trying to help in the situation. So, when I received a recent credit of almost $30 from B&N for ebooks only, I wasn’t sure how I would use the credit with no Nook at my disposal. Until, I remembered I could use the iPad app.

I am not a huge fan of ebooks for several reasons. The main one being that often then ebook is the same price as the print book. With my credit, I decided to purchase a book or two that I would most likely not reach for on the shelves: erotica. I recently read book one in The Original Sinners series (The Siren) by Tiffany Reisz after reading a review of the book at Thelittlebookbutterfly blog. The next thing I knew, being in another reading slump and all, I found myself downloading book two: The Angel (now I’m on book three).

I know, I’m mostly a Young Adult book blog. That’s the genre I love. It’s what I read most. But, once in a while, I enjoy something that I know I will fly through and read in a few days. I’ve read quite a bit of erotica. I’m sure Reisz’s books are fall under the erotica umbrella because of the sex. However, compared to the others I’ve read, her novels are not littered with a bombardment of sex scenes AND they’re well written unlike the other more popular book of the same genre.

Warning before you read: The Angel is not just erotica. It’s BDSM erotica. There are some scenes that may repulse or offend. But, understand, that everything in the book between the characters is consensual. BDSM takes many forms. The characters who belong to this world belong to a world of BDSM that is not for the light hearted. They mean business when they play. I don’t know that I would recommend this to everyone. But, if you are not easily offended by sex, I would suggest to give The Original Sinners Series a go.

Reviewing a sequel is tricky, especially if it’s a sequel that you don’t think many have read the first book in the series. I also hate spoilers. Therefore, I will only say these few things about the book. It does have a story, a good one. There is also a subplot that I found equally interesting. I love all of the characters. Some I like more than others but I like them all and find them intriguing.

Maybe erotica isn’t your genre of choice. I don’t normally read it as well. But, if you were to venture into erotica and weren’t sure where you should begin, I think The Original Sinners is a perfect place to start.

Movie Review… Me Before You

Being someone who read Me Before You by Jojo Moyes before the movie, I knew seeing Sam Claflin as Will Traynor would wreck me. Yep… I was wrecked in that movie theater yesterday afternoon.

Before you read any further… SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

tumblr_o23bg8k8MO1t7x4k5o1_500

If you have not read the book or have not seen the movie, you should stop reading. WP doesn’t get us an option to hide spoilers (that I know of). WP, you need to get on that one!

Book vs. movie. This was a good adaptation. The characters were casted perfectly, in my opinion. For the most part the plot was kept in tact. But, I’ll get to that in a moment. Can I just say that I love both Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin? They both played their roles wonderfully. Yes, I’m gushing. Lou is a quirky character. Emilia nailed that quirkiness. The ultra cool and confident Daenerys Targaryen (that’s how I look at Daenerys) is a far step away from clumsy, naive, selfless Lou. Emilia had definitely proven she has diversity as an actress. And, Sam… goodness.

tumblr_o81bgpNgLi1uo7kfbo1_500

Not only did he bring my favorite Hunger Games character to life for me and did it amazingly well, he’s taken another character that absolutely wrecked me in the written form and brought him to life beautifully. He played Will so well that I never thought I was being robbed or that I had imagined him as someone else (um… maybe like Edward Cullen).

Now for the spoilery section… (I don’t think spoilery is a word but it works).

There were some major (and minor) things omitted just as it is with every film adaption. The book is a bit darker. Lou’s situation at home is more stressful and less welcoming. The movie doesn’t show the tension between her and her sister or the fact that her father’s unemployment is a huge burden for her (and her family). While Lou is close to her sister, they have a relationship that is very strained because of her sister’s son and her sister’s decision to return to school. In the book, Lou is constantly sacrificing her own needs for those around her.

I understand that the book needs to be cut in order to fit it in two hour movie. Patrick and Lou relationship’s is detailed quite a bit more in the book, of course. She even moves in with him. I’m nit picking, I know. But, the Traynor family comes under legal and media scrutiny because Patrick, being bitter, goes to the papers and reveals that Will, with his family’s help and support, plans to take his own life at a facility in Switzerland. It’s a small part of the book. I get why they left it out.

However, I was surprised that they left out Lou’s experience within the castle’s maze. The movie doesn’t even show the castle has a maze. In the maze, Lou is assaulted by a group of men. This incident shapes Lou’s adult life. But, also, the moment Lou shares what happened to her with Will, there is a shift in their relationship. She makes herself vulnerable by recounting what happened that evening which I think opens the door for Will to be more vulnerable with her as well. In the book, it’s only a few pages. Moyes doesn’t hang around it for long. Perhaps the assault would have overshadowed the real story and that is why is was necessary to leave out. Moyes didn’t devote a lot of pages to the assault although you knew if had a profound affect on Lou. I don’t know if they could have “glossed” over her assault and not spend some time on it.

tumblr_o4acxnezVi1uzomqmo1_500

That being said, I was totally satisfied with the adaptation. I will buy this one on Bly-ray and watch it over and over with a box of Kleenex in my lap. If you want to see a movie that will give you a good, ugly cry… this one is it.

On a final note, there’s been quite a bit of controversy surrounding this movie. It’s just a movie. It’s not a how to manual. It’s not a definitive representation of how all disabled people view their lives. This is a gut wrenching piece of fiction. A story written by a talented author. It’s entertainment nothing more. People should just embrace it as such rather than find a reason to ride it coattails with a political agenda.

Adelina struggles to cling to the good within her. But how can someone be good when her very existence depends on darkness?

Bestselling author Marie Lu delivers another heart-pounding adventure in this exhilarating sequel to The Young Elites. (Synopsis & photo via Goodreads)

I finished The Rose Society about a week ago. I needed to digest it for a bit before I wrote a review. Reason being, if i had written my review immediately, it would have been scathing. As the story was closing, I was finding myself becoming increasingly frustrated. I was angry at the choices Adelina was making, at the choices Violetta was making. Taking a few days to write the review helped me put something major about this book into perspective. THE ROSE SOCIETY IS A BOOK ABOUT THE VILLIAN.

Adelina is frustrating (AF). I want to strangle her half the time. She doesn’t think things through. She is a girl on hell bent on revenge. Revenge for feeling betrayed, hurt, wronged… you name it, she’s experienced it. I have to give props to Marie Lu for taking on the task of writing from the villain’s POV and being successful at it. She has developed Adelina into this dark character who can be wicked cruel. I love it.

What makes the book so interesting and magical is that the main characters are well developed. Lu gives you insight to why they act the way they do. She gives you their history. You not only know them but you also understand them. She’s created amazing characters to help carry this story. It doesn’t stand on the character of Adelina. The Daggers, Violetta, Teren, Giulietta, Maeve are all an important part of the plot line and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out for all of them. The Rose Society is a great story, a great sequel. And, for the first time, I am caught up in a series before the next book is released! This is a proud moment for me.

I can’t wait for the final book to be released. I can only imagine that if Lu runs the course of a real villain, the future will not be bright for Adelina. I hope that she can follow through even if tragic. I will admit that if Adelina is redeemed and becomes the hero, a book will fly across a room.

The Tension Experience: A Path Towards Truth & Enlightenment

While this blog is mostly surrounded around book talk, once in a great awhile I let other pieces of my life slip in. I have always been fascinated with horror and haunts. However, it wasn’t until the last few years that I became fascinated with haunts outside of a theme park setting and found the world of extreme haunts, Blackout to be specific. Today, I wear my Blackout survivor badge of honor proudly.

Recently, I’ve been through into the world of immersive theater. A world that I didn’t know existed to the extent that it does. This world has breathed new life into me during a time in my life that has been very trying. About a month ago, I was followed by an account on Instagram that left me with more questions than answers. Not only was I followed by them on my personal account, I was also, at the time, followed by them on my bookish account. To say my interest was piqued would be an understatement. I was being drawn into The Tension Experience.

I was lead to a website that, through puzzles and cryptic messages, encouraged me to follow a path towards enlightenment and truth. There was a very personal questionnaire that was filled out. How it will be used to tailor my experience remains to be seen.  But, I am looking forward to the possibilities.

Following them through all social media accounts, I knew that at this time it was important to show interest and an honest desire to participate. One night there was a message posted to my Facebook wall: If we do not have your number, we cannot call you. TENSION. Oh my!!!! I knew I was getting close and was on the right track. I was no longer a “lurker,” I was becoming a participant.

Last weekend I was extended an invitation to a Tension event. A mixer with others like me they call the Apostles of the Beginning. My invitation was sent via Facebook messenger. I was given a date, a time, and a zip code. Oh.. and instructed that the waiver I will be receiving by email needed to be signed and returned prior to the event or my spot would be vacated.

Sunday, May 29th, I drove up to Los Angeles county. All I had was a zip code that brought me to the city of Sun Valley. Loitering in a parking lot, I waited anxiously for an email that would contain the address. When it finally came through, I drove by the address to see where I was headed. We were instructed not to arrive prior to 1:15pm. I arrived a few minutes before 1:30pm. There was already a group of people outside. It was clear many already knew one another. Being someone who is relatively shy at first, I was instantly welcomed by the first group of people I came upon. I was also recognizing a few people that I have seen commenting on the Facebook pages of other “haunts.”Admittedly, I even fangirled a bit over Mike and Russell of My Haunt Life.

Promptly at 1:30, the doors opened and we were checked in by one of the attendants. She was a happy, welcoming woman. I was given a name tag by her; and, a yellow rose by another woman named Addison. Addison seemed quite uncomfortable & anxious. It was evident something was bothering her. We were given time to mingle a bit. There was an obvious thing occurring around the room. Some individuals were being taken aside and spoken to privately. Later on, we found out that many of us were told different things, asked to do certain things, or, for some, possibly warned about what was to come.

I was approached by a woman who was taking photos of the event. She wasn’t very welcoming. Paraphrasing, I was told that someone there was going to be tortured for 2 hours and was I prepared to witness that. I was asked if I were strong enough because that was what was going to happen. The conversation was quick and sent my mind spinning. My anxiety level was definitely rising because I had no idea what was at store of us or anyone in the room.

Let the official festivities begin…

We were welcomed by an elder. Who explained to us that if we were looking for answers, we were not going to get them today. The answers will come through our on selves during our own paths. We listened to a speech by Mike Fontaine, one of the attendees, who has been appointed as a scribe. His speech focuses on community.

Next, a hooded man is brought into the room, said to be a traitor to the OOA. He had posted in a community forum criticism of the organization and been kicked out. He wanted to be accepted back within our ranks. We were asked as a group to vote whether he should be given a second chance or banished. Our group believes in second chances.

The whole meeting went from 0-60 in a matter of seconds. We were told that one of the initiates would be brought forward, disrobed, and judged for her sins. This is when they brought froward Addison. She looked nervous. And, my anxiety level once again shot through the roof. Was she the one to be tortured that the photographer had spoke of? Every thing happened so fast. There was a commotion in the back of the room and a man was screaming about how this was his daughter and she’s been brainwashed by this organization. He had said that we were all part of an organization that had kidnapped his daughter. He was manhandled by security and thrown out. During the scuffle, Addison was whisked away out the front door.

The elder spoke briefly about how our location had been compromised and that we were to wait patiently for further instructions. We were left alone to wander the room, many looking for clues, examining the things left behind by the OOA, and to talk about everything that had just transpired before us. Some of even went out afterwards to continue the conversations and camaraderie. The beginnings of building our community further.

The haunt community is a small one but, as far as I can tell, a welcoming one. We share a love for something that goes beyond the scope of what many people may consider “normal.” I know many people who don’t understand my fascination with the things that go bump in the night. I know this is a “book blog.” But, I hope you don’t mind my posting once in while my experiences while I embark on this new adventure.

I don’t have any more answers now than when I did before I was welcomed into all of this. And, I’m not sure yet where it will lead me or what _path I will find myself on. But, The Tension Experience promises you get what you put into it. I find I’m throwing myself into its community and wanting more, wanting to be pulled in deeper. Glory Be!

The Siren By Tiffany Reisz

9780778313533_smp.inddNotorious Nora Sutherlin is famous for her delicious works of erotica, each one more popular with readers than the last. But her latest manuscript is different—more serious, more personal—and she’s sure it’ll be her breakout book… if it ever sees the light of day.

Zachary Easton holds Nora’s fate in his well-manicured hands. The demanding British editor agrees to handle the book on one condition: he wants complete control. Nora must rewrite the entire novel to his exacting standards—in six weeks—or it’s no deal.

Nora’s grueling writing sessions with Zach are draining… and shockingly arousing. And a dangerous former lover has her wondering which is more torturous—staying away from him… or returning to his bed?

Nora thought she knew everything about being pushed to your limits. But in a world where passion is pain, nothing is ever that simple. (Photo and synopsis via Goodreads)

First, let me say that I found this book because a fellow blogger reviewed it, thelittlebookbutterfly. Her review was enough to catch my attention. I don’t read a lot of erotica. I can’t say I remember when the last time I read erotica. Erotica is a strange genre, in my opinion. Often the plot lines are similar, the writing is bad, and the romance makes me want to vomit. I often wonder how many of the writers of erotica actually practice what they are writing. lol That being said, I think the main reason I stay away from erotica is that the writing is usually so bad.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I’ve been struggling with my depression. The Siren was the perfect book to read while in the midst of a being stuck in a hole because it really doesn’t require a lot of thought to read. That’s not a backhanded compliment or an insult! Sometimes, you just need to read a book that is a fast read and doesn’t require you to “pay attention” to details. For example, when I read one of the Mortal Instruments, I have to pay attention because I never know what scene, character, or information is going to come back into the story’s plot.

If you were to ever read erotica, I’d say this is one to read. I enjoyed the premise of it. Nora isn’t a meek, naive innocent woman like in many of the currently popular erotica releases. It’s quite the opposite, she introduces the male lead to her world of BDSM. I appreciate that she’s a strong woman who is independent and speaks her mind. She’s a good character. Of course, if you analyze the book deeper, one could argue that she is dependent on certain relationships in her life but aren’t we all?

The sex. With any piece of erotica fiction, you never know what you’re going to get. In my opinion, 50 Shades of Grey is child’s play compared to a lot of what I’ve read in the past. This book does give a more honest and real look into the world of BDSM. That being said, the sex… there isn’t a lot of it, surprisingly. There is a lot of sexual tension between Nora and her male characters. But, there isn’t a lot of “real” time sex. The sex scenes are mostly within Nora’s manuscript or refections.

However, I do agree with thelittlebookbutterfly, when Nora takes Zach into her “world” for an evening at a private BDSM club, things happen that some may be uncomfortable by. For me, that was Nora’s receipt of a gift from her former Dominant Søren. I won’t go into any detail but it becomes a piece of the storyline. I think it would make a few people very comfortable. I just wonder if the author had to go to this place to make a point or to show the hold that Søren has over Nora.

Søren’s character was a bit confusing for me. I think in him, Reisz wanted a little shock value. He’s well written as a dominant. However, I’m not sure if he’s a believable character because of his profession, which I won’t spoil. I wouldn’t mind knowing more about him and his past, about his daily ongoings.

The story has some solid characters. It’s not a book that just about the sex. It’s about how this lifestyle can be and is for many a way of life and that can make it difficult for wanted relationships to be sustainable. It’s also about forgiveness and letting go of guilt. I liked it. I’m not sure I will continue with the series though. If you want a super fast read that’s a bit kinky and has a better storyline than 50 Shades, I would recommend this one.

Now back to finishing up The Rose Society by Marie Lu.
